Hi, I’m Nathan Glab
My Bmx journey started at the age of 12 growing up in Geelong. In Bmx standards, I was a bit of a late starter. I had no natural skill and wasn’t even very sporty growing up. Throughout my early years of racing you would find me at the back of the pack, I wasn’t sold on the sport and didn’t think it was for me.
I was ready to call it a day but my parents had organised some coaching with one of the local coaches. Under a bit of guidance I built a bit of momentum and started progressing and fell in love with the sport. I always had so much respect for my coaches, and often wonder if I would have kept riding if I didn’t have one. This is where my interest and appreciation for coaching started.
Through ages 13 and 14, I still had no natural talent. But I loved the sport. I slowly made my way into finals at opens and got my first state plate at 14.
I began racing “pro” classes at 14, jumping into A pro. I spent a few years mixing it in there before stepping up into AA pro. Alongside mixing it in junior elite and elite at national events. I had the opportunity to jump onto the Hrvfitness team where I was able to learn a lot from my team mate Tom Siinmaa and coach Tony Harvey.
I’m currently still a big lover of racing, these days you’ll find me racing superclass with the other big dogs.
my coaching journey
I always had so much respect for coaches and people who helped me along my journey, so it’s always something I was interested in.
I had some close friends who started racing bmx and were looking for a bit of guidance. So I sorted my level coaching accreditation to help them out. In my early years of coaching in Geelong, I had a very small crew but dedicated. A lot like myself, we had no natural talent but knew the value of hard work. Our little crew went onto snagging state plates, a national plate and had a rider frequently getting on women superclass podiums.
At the time I was coaching my little crew and working at a gym as a trainer where I also trained riders in the gym.
In 2019, I decided I needed a change and moved to Melbourne. Soon after moving I had opportunities to work with a few clubs. Where I met some amazing riders and people who I still coach to this day.
From modest beginnings, coaching 1 session at Park Orchards, things have grown quite a lot since then. I now help 4 clubs spread across Melbourne to develop their riders. I’ve also had opportunities to help riders along their elite journey, Which has been incredibly rewarding and given me plenty of great lessons.
Throughout the years, we’ve helped riders achieve state plates, State champions, national plates, national champions and world cup podiums.
Results are great and very important, however I’m also very proud to keep riders in the sport of Bmx. The turnover rate is quite high as riders reach their teens. I’m stoked to see many of our riders competing well into their adult years. I’m a big believer in creating a good culture, we create animals but also have fun along the way.
